One Hundred Reasons To Be Optimistic About Small Business In The U.K.

Despite the news, economic reports and my Twitter feed, when I look at the state of Small Business in the U.K., I find many reasons to be optimistic. I’m not on my own here am I? I know there is plenty in the news that could get small businesses down; from economic challenges, talk of the high street “dying,” and small business confidence down for another quarter – the longest period it’s been down since the last recession.

Costco Wholesale Corp.’s first outlet in China opened on Tuesday and was soon overrun with customers willing to fight over discounted products and wait hours to pay for their purchases.

Norway’s Fund Wants to Add Up to $100 Billion in U.S. Stocks

Norway’s wealth fund proposed overhauling its global holdings, calling for a shift away from Europe in a move that would allow it to boost its U.S. stock investments by as much $100 billion and take a larger chunk of the biggest technology companies.

In a letter sent to the Finance Ministry released on Tuesday, the $1 trillion fund recommended that its investments “be adjusted further towards float-adjusted market weights by increasing the weight of equities in North America and reducing the weight of equities in European developed markets.”

Turkish Bank Ziraat Closes Door on Venezuela Amid U.S. Sanctions

Ziraat Bank, Turkey’s largest bank by assets, has stopped offering services to Venezuela’s Central Bank in wake of tougher U.S. sanctions that raise the stakes for companies that do business with the Caribbean nation.

The Ankara-based state bank confirmed the closing of its account without providing further details. Venezuela’s Central Bank was relying on Ziraat to pay contractors, move money and import products in Turkish liras. A Venezuela Central Bank press official didn’t respond to requests for comment.

People Make It So Hard to Ditch Plastic Straws

Rarely has a minor consumer product received more vilification than the plastic straw. As a symbol of human wastefulness and our careless disregard for the environment, straws are the near-perfect villain. You use a plastic straw once and toss it, but it stays with us forever, sitting in a landfill, floating in the sea or harming wildlife.

That’s why some local governments like that of New York City have stopped allowing them, along with other single-use plastics. This seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do, even though plastic straws comprise only a small part of the total volume of plastic disposed of each year.

Elon Musk wants to link brains directly to machines

Elon musk, perhaps the world’s most famous entrepreneur, is sometimes referred to as “the Trump of technology”—not for political reasons, but because of his habit of making, at short notice, spectacular pronouncements that stretch the bounds of credibility. On July 16th he was at it again, unveiling a new type of brain-machine interface (bmi). If human beings do not enter a symbiosis with artificial intelligence (ai), he declared, they are sure to be left behind. And he, the announcement implied, was going to be the man who stopped that happening.
