Bitcoin Loses Almost a Third of Its Value as Libra Hype Fades

Facebook Inc.’s struggle to convince lawmakers it can create a viable cryptocurrency is rubbing off on bitcoin.

The world’s most popular cryptocurrency has fallen sharply as regulatory scrutiny of Facebook’s ambitious plan to release its own digital coin, called Libra, has spoiled bitcoin’s big rally this year.

UK wage growth nears 11-year high but hiring slows

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said earnings, excluding the effects of bonuses, rose by 3.6% on an annual basis in the three months to May – beating the forecasts of economists.

When bonuses were included, the percentage figure rose to 3.4% from 3.2% a month earlier.

The data suggests a boost to household spending power as the rate of inflation, due to be updated on Wednesday, currently stands at 2%.

Amazon to Retrain a Third of Its U.S. Workforce

U.S. companies are increasingly paying up to retrain workers as new technologies transform the workplace and companies struggle to recruit talent in one of the hottest job markets in decades.

Amazon.com Inc. is the latest example of a large employer committing to help its workers gain new skills. The online retailer said Thursday it plans to spend $700 million over about six years to retrain a third of its U.S. workforce as automation, machine learning and other technology upends the way many of its employees do their jobs.

Medium of exchange

The boring Hong Kong dollar has been more exciting of late. A couple months after a U.S. hedge fund manager targeted the currency, it is moving sharply. Two giant upcoming stock sales are a major factor, but the recurring phenomenon flags a peculiarity of the system.

Since late May, Hong Kong’s dollar has been on a relative tear for a currency that trades in a narrow band against the U.S. dollar, to which it is pegged. It touched its strongest level in two years last week. The three-month Hong Kong Interbank Offered Rate ticked up to 2.7%, outstripping the equivalent U.S. dollar Libor rate of 2.3%.

Job-Interview Etiquette Isn’t Just for the Applicants

Employers are battling to hire skilled employees in one of the tightest labor markets in 50 years. So they must be courting job seekers, wooing them with care and consideration—right?

Some hiring managers apparently didn’t get the memo.

A growing number of job applicants are being ghosted—interviewing for jobs, then getting no follow-up response from the employer. Others say employers’ dismissive handling of their applications or interviews is leaving them cold.

A federal judge on Monday blocked a Trump administration rule requiring drugmakers to put prices in television ads, a central part of the president’s push to lower the cost of prescription medications.

The decision from U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, D.C., is the latest blow to a number of administrative actions on health care.

Spurred by Amazon, Supermarkets Try Swapping Cashiers for Cameras

LONDON—A man strolled down the candy aisle of a grocery store in England last month, picked up a bar of chocolate and stashed it in his back pocket. He wasn’t stealing. Specially equipped surveillance cameras were tracking both his body and the products he was taking off the shelves, to help him pay for them.
